Over the years, we have had the pleasure to offer a number of commemorative badges honoring U.S. Major League Tours of Japan, of the type that were presented to players and other dignitaries. We have also seen such badges offered by other auction houses. However, this is the first time we have ever seen a badge that commemorates the 1966 Los Angeles Dodgers Japan Tour. This metal badge with enameled front contains the legend, "1966 Los Angeles Dodgers, 7th U.S./Japan Baseball Tournament, Yomiuri Shimbun". The Yomiuri Shimbun (newspaper) was the tour sponsor.
The Dodgers played 18 games against assorted Japan Pro Baseball opposition. Led by Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston, Maury Wills, and the Davis Boys, Tommy and Willie, the Dodgers appeared in various venues across Japan and were welcomed by large, cheering crowds. The Dodgers finished the Tour with nine wins, eight losses and one tie. The All Japan team was led by Sadaharu Oh, who batted .344 with five homers. At the time, this result was considered to be surprising, given previous Tour results, and the perceived weakness of the Japanese team by American commentators of the era.
Size: 1 5/8" x 1 3/4"
Condition: The front is Ex/Mt to Nm. However, the pin that was originally attached to the back has been removed, and the back exhibits chipping and wear in general.
