2015 was Shohei Ohtani's third season in Japan Pro Baseball. As a pitcher, he was named to the Pacific League Best 9 team after posting a record of 15-5, 2.24. He led the league in ERA, and tied for the most wins. He struck out 196 batters in 160 2/3 innings. He also finished third in Pacific League MVP balloting. It was quite an impressive year on the mound for the then 21-year-old hurler.
Surprisingly, at the plate, Ohtani endured an awful season. He batted only 109 times, and his batting average was a mere .202. He hit only five homers. Given his performance at the plate in 2024 for the Los Angeles Dodgers, it is hard to believe that his output as a hitter could ever have been so anemic. Obviously, he got a lot better. In fact, he hit .322 in 2016, swatting 22 homers in just 326 at bats, while continuing his mound mastery.
