Umpire Doug Harvey was nicknamed "God" by major league players. He was a commanding presence behind the plate at National League games from 1962 to 1992. He was almost universally rated as the best umpire of his era. In 2010, he was elected to the Hall of fame.
In 1966, Doug Harvey accompanied the Los Angeles Dodgers on their post season Tour of Japan to work as an umpire. This cap was worn by Harvey during the tour while umpiring. It was made in Japan especially for his use. The Japanese cap size 60 is seen on one of the inside tags, which corresponds to the American hat size of 7 1/2. Apparently, according to the tag, the cap was a special order. The other tag inside indicates that the cap was made by the Tamazawa Sporting Goods Company. On the outside of the bill, Harvey or someone else attached a label reading "Made in Japan During Goodwill Tour 1966".
