Calbee has produced sets of
baseball cards in Japan every single year since 1973. The first six cards in Calbee’s maiden issue
all feature Japan Pro Baseball icon, Shigeo Nagashima. The card offered here is card #6 from that
initial run.
There were two back versions
of the first 91 cards that Calbee produced in 1973. Cards from JCM 1 like the card offered here
contain a crossed bats and a wreath motif on the back at upper center. JCM 1 cards seem to be more the more popular
version with collectors, who generally favor the crossed bats design. The other version, JCM 2, has the player’s
team flag on the back instead of the bats and wreath.
The example offered in this
lot stands at the top of the PSA grading pyramid, as it has received the grade
of PSA 8 (Nm/Mt). It is the only example
of JCM 1 card #6 to achieve a grade higher than PSA 6. This is an important card for any Calbee card
or Nagashima collection.
