A San Francisco native, Dempsey began his professional baseball career after serving in the Navy during WWII. Dempsey, a righthanded sidearm pitcher, led the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts in 1948 and 1949. Following a switch to the bullpen in 1950, Dempsey became a Pittsburgh Pirate for the 1951 season.
Unfortunately, Pirates general manager, Branch Rickey, convinced Dempsey to change to an overhand delivery. This new pitching style proved to be ineffective and Dempsey was ultimately returned to the Seals.
