As with U.S., baseball cards, Japanese cards depicting umpires are quite scarce. Takayoshi Sumida, born in Hiroshima, was a star third baseman for Meiji U. in the Japan Big Six University League in the late 1920s. He later became a Big
Six University League umpire. From 1950 to 1965, he was a Japan Pro Baseball umpire, operating in the Pacific League. He retired in 1965 after having umpired more than 1,500 Japan Pro Baseball Games. JGA 38 is one of only a few
cards produced depicting Sumida. Only three examples of this JGA 38 card are known, while only a handful of other examples of Sumida cards are known. Therefore, this is a rare opportunity to obtain a card of Sumida.
