This giant sized, blank backed card was originally a first prize winner premium card on a display sheet. In 1953, Lopat was coming off arguably his best season as a New York Yankee. He had just completed a 16-4 season with a league leading 2.42 ERA, and had capped off that performance with a complete game victory in Game 2 of the World Series. The Series ended on October 5th. On October 23rd, Lopat was in Japan leading a delegation of U.S. Major League All Stars on a 12 game Tour. The All Stars won 11 of the 12 games against Japan Pro Baseball opposition, with Lopat himself going 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA. "Ed Lopat pitcher" is printed on the top line of the card in Japanese text, with "Yankees" printed in parentheses on the bottom line. Only two examples of this baseball card are currently known to exist. This is truly a rare item to be cherished by a vintage New York Yankees collector.
