The JCM 14e Marukami Bat on Right menko card of Sadaharu Oh has often been referred to by collectors as the "smiling Oh" card. There are many early 1960s cards of Sadaharu Oh in his flamingo stance, or Oh swinging. There is even the occasional portrait. However, this is the only early Oh card which is prized by collectors because of the World Home Run King's big grin. 1962 was Oh's first big year at the plate, as his 38 homers led the Central League, earning him his first of 18 consecutive Central League Best 9 team awards.
This card has four large white borders! Many years ago, Sadaharu Oh tobacco type menko cards such as this one were often trimmed just prior to submission to third party grading companies, in order that the card might receive a higher grade than originally warranted. Ultimately, the grading companies found out about this practice, and over the last number of years, only cards that "measured up" properly have been awarded high grades.
