Twenty-eight players comprising the 1958 Central League all star team autographed this large piece of Japanese washi. Washi is traditional Japanese paper processed by hand using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub, or the paper mulberry bush. All players signed the washi with a traditional Japanese brush pen. This piece was originally presented to a Japanese dignitary who had displayed it in a frame.
The most significant autograph is that of Shigeo Nagashima, who was a rookie at the time. In his 17 year pro career, Nagashima was named to the all star team every season!
In all, there are 28 player signatures including 12 Japan Pro Baseball Hall of Fame members. The signees are (counterclockwise from bottom) Shigeru Mizuhara (HOF), Tatsuro Hirooka (HOF), Motoshi Fujita (HOF), Shigeo Nagashima (HOF), Takashi Suzuki, Kaiser Tanaka (Hawaii), Ryohei Hasegawa (HOF), Kiyoshi Doi, Masaaki Koyama (HOF), Hiroshi Fujii, Noboru Inoue, Masaichi Kaneda (HOF), Hiroomi Ooyane, Jun Hakota, Atsushi Otsu, Yoshio Yoshida (HOF), Kenjiro Tamiya (HOF), Genichi Murata, Kazuhiko Sakazaki, Andy Miyamoto (Hawaii), Hideshi Miyake, Shigeru Fujio, Noboru Akiyama (HOF), Tetsuharu Kawakami (HOF) & Wally Yonamine (HOF)(Hawaii).
This magnificent treasure will be rolled up for shipment to the winning bidder.
Size: 27" x 13 1/4"
Condition: Bold signatures grade from 9 to 10 out of 10. The washi is creased from having been folded or rolled and has minor edge damage and a bit of paper residue on the back from having been previously mounted in a frame. These imperfections do not affect any of the autographs.
