Japan Hall of Fame member Hisanori Karita was one of the players who faced the U.S. Major League All Stars led by Lou Gehrig and Lefty Grove during their 1931 Tour of Japan. Interestingly he also played for the All Japan team that faced Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, et. al. in 1934 as well. He batted .300 during the 1931 Tour, and .276 during the 1934 Tour. Karita, a second baseman/shortstop, one of the greatest fielders in the history of Japan Pro Baseball, formed half of the "Million Dollar Double Play Combination" in the late 1930s.
During his 16 year Japan Pro Baseball career, Karita was a player/manager during eight seasons. This autographed baseball card was produced during the 1950 season, while Karita was in charge of the newly formed Mainichi Orions of the Pacific League. The Orions were league champs, going 81-34-5. The team went on to win the inaugural Japan Series in six games. Karita was 39 years old in 1950, but he still managed to bat .267/.339/382 as a part time player.
This bromide was autographed by Karita around 1950. Karita's surname was stamped on the back by the manufacturer. It is the only single signed Karita baseball card that we have ever auctioned.
