According to Japanese Baseball Cards, Checklist & Price Guide, Vintage Edition 3.0, cards from the scarce gold border version of JCM 24 Hoshi Gangu are valued at two to five times the price of the regular white bordered cards.
A teammate of Shigeo Nagashima at Rikkio University, Tadashi Sugiura, unlike Nagashima, spurned the Yomiuri Giants to sign with the Nankai Hawks. He was Pacific League ROY in 1958, winning 27 games and fashioning a 2.05 ERA. The following season, Sugiura dazzled Japan with a 38-4 won/loss record and minuscule 1.41 ERA.
