Cards #127-144 in the JC 3 Calbee set are exceedingly rare. In fact, they are by far the most difficult cards to find in the entire 935 card set! JC 3 is well known for containing the only two Japanese cards of Frank Howard ever issued. The other card is #70 (see previous lot), which is somewhat difficult to locate. However, Howard card #127, featured in this lot, is hardly ever seen. This is the first time in our 35 years of auctions that we have ever had the privilege of offering an example of this card.
Card #70 was part of the first series of JC 3. Card #127 was part of the second series. We have often wondered whether card #127 was pulled from the print run at some point due to Howard's having left Japan so quickly, thus accounting for the card's extreme scarcity compared to #70.
