Larry Doby played for the Newark Eagles in the Negro Leagues prior to becoming only the second African American to play in the major leagues, and the first to do so in the American League. Doby played major league baseball from 1947 to 1959 with the Indians, White Sox and Tigers. Subsequently, he finished his career with the Chunichi Dragons in 1962. He is the only player enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown who also was an active player in Japan Pro Baseball.

SGC will not assign a numerical grade to most hand cut Japanese "tobacco menko" type cards. As a result, this card is shown to be "Authentic" on the flip. All JCM 57b cards that we have ever seen, regardless of the player depicted are hand cut.  PSA does assign grades to hand cut cards, including that notation along with the grade.

We feel that SGC was incorrect in adding an "Evidence of Trimming" notation to the grade. JCM 57b cards have much narrower white borders than virtually all other "tobacco menko" styled cards. In fact, of the seven Doby cards we have auctioned over the past three decades plus, this example has the widest borders by far!
