Japanese newspaper companies traditionally advertised their product by producing large posters containing the day's headlines and photos. These posters were placed in glass display cases along busy streets and at train stations.

This poster, dated October 5, 1955, contains a New York Yankees team photo with text at left discussing the forthcoming Yankees Tour of Japan. The Yankees were to play 16 games commencing on October 22. The text refers to various players and their locations in the photo. Players such as Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Billy Martin, Elston Howard and Manager Casey Stengel are easily identified. On October 4, 1955, the Yankees had lost Game 7 of the World Series to the Dodgers. However, the Yankees got a measure of revenge by beating their Japanese opposition in 15 of 16 contests with one tie.

Newspaper advertising posters of the 1950s were rarely saved, due to their fragile nature and daily production.   This is one of only two examples of this poster known to the hobby.

Size: 14 3/8" x 10 1/8"

Condition: The poster has five pinholes across the top from originally being displayed for advertising purposes. The number "2" is written in ink at lower left. This number was written most likely by a newspaper employee, possibly in reference to the fact that a series of four different Mainichi News Yankee Tour posters exist, and this might be regarded as poster number two. Also, there is a crease at Mantle and Berra's feet.
