Obviously, Ted Williams needs no introduction to anyone reading this lot description. His image appears on the back of all eight cards of the JCM 44 set. Interestingly, the Ted Williams backs are numbered 1 to 10, and any card front can
be found in combination with any Williams back. This card has number 10 printed on the back. While Williams is a popular American icon, Takeshi Doigaki (the player shown on the front) is completely unknown to nearly all American baseball fans. Doigaki was the most
prominent catcher of the postwar era in Japan, and surprisingly was never elected to the Hall of Fame. Playing primarily for the Hanshin Tigers and Mainichi Orions during his 18 year career (1940-1957), Doigaki won five consecutive Best
9 awards, and had a lifetime batting average of .282. He barely missed out on consecutive league batting championships.
