Japanese newspaper companies traditionally advertised their product by producing posters containing the day's headlines and photos. These posters were placed in glass display cases along busy streets and train stations. This poster
was an advertisement for the Jiji Shashin newspaper of April 2, 1937. As printed in English at the bottom, Van Lingle Mungo of the Brooklyn Dodgers is pictured while demonstrating a portion of his "intense training" regimen. It is truly
remarkable that this specimen has survived for the past 82 years! Mungo went on to post a 9-11 won-loss record with a 2.91 ERA in 1937.
