During the early to mid 1920s, Amachi (1903-1976), a catcher, and Yuasa (1902-1958), a pitcher, formed a star battery at Meiji U. In 1923, the pair propelled Meiji to it's first ever Big Six University League championship. In 1925, Yuasa threw two no hitters in league play and struck out 109 batters, a league record which stood for 50 years. After graduation, the pair went their separate ways, with Yuasa beginning a long association with the Osaka Mainichi semi-pro team and Amachi becoming a Big Six League umpire. Yuasa was said to be one of the three great pitchers of the 1920s along with Hall of Famers Goro Taniguchi and Michimaru Ono. Ultimately, the two became very successful Japan Pro Baseball managers in the early postwar years. Amachi led the Chunichi Dragons to their first Japan Series championship (1954). The Dragons never won another until 2007. Meanwhile, Yuasa was manager of the Mainichi Orions, a first year expansion team who incredibly won the 1950 Japan Series. While Amachi never played professionally, Yuasa appeared on the mound in a late season1950 game at age 48, matched up against Hall of Famer Shinji Hamazaki, manager of the Hankyu Braves who was almost a year older at the time! Yuasa went four innings and was not involved in the decision. In this autographed photo, taken in the 1920s, Yuasa appears at left, with Amachi at right. Both signed in fountain pen.
