On January 14, 1954, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were married. On February 1, 1954, after spending two weeks in Palm Springs, the couple began their honeymoon in Japan. They were accompanied by Lefty O'Doul and his wife. The original purpose of the trip, arranged by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, had been for DiMaggio to give playing tips to Japan Pro Baseball players, but the couple decided that this journey to the Far East would make an ideal honeymoon as well. They were wrong. Marilyn was so popular in Japan that her status dwarfed even DiMaggio's. When the couple deplaned in Tokyo, they were mobbed by a throng of more than 3,000 people. Their trip by car to the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo took six hours, as the frenzied masses threw themselves upon the vehicle! Finally, the Tour began. DiMaggio worked out with all six Japan Central League teams. Meanwhile, Marilyn spent much of the time entertaining U.S. troops in Korea. After 24 days, the couple returned to the U.S. Eight months later, the marriage was over. This large, original photo was taken during the honeymoon in Japan. DiMaggio and Monroe are pictured with what we assume are members of the Yomiuri Shimbun staff. Blank backed.
