JK 23 is an unusual set in that each card features a color headshot of a baseball player on the front, and a purple tint, full body image of a sumo wrestler on the back. The 44 card set was originally issued with a boys' magazine in six uncut sheets. Luis was a catcher who had attended St. Louis High School in Hawaii. St. Louis was the first American baseball team to tour Japan, back in 1903. After two years in the U.S. minor leagues, Luis joined the Mainichi Orions for the 1954 season and batted .293, while playing every game, which was truly impressive for a catcher. His final season was 1955, when he batted .261.
