Following the success of Wally Yonamine in 1951, several more Hawaiians made their Japan Pro Baseball debuts in 1952. Most prominent
among them was Jun Hirota, who became the Yomiuri Giants' main catcher for the next four seasons. A graduate of McKinley High School in
Honolulu, Hirota next played for the famed Hawaii Asahi team, before moving on to the Giants in Japan. For three consecutive years (1953 to
1955) Hirota was named to the Central League Best 9 team.
