Offered here is one of the scarcest and most sought after Japanese baseball publications. This issue of Yakyukai Magazine published in May 1927 features Negro League catcher Neal Pullen and Japanese Hall of Famer Shinji Hamazaki on the cover.
The Philadelphia Royal Giants, led by Hall of Famers Biz Mackey and Andy Cooper, traveled to Japan in April 1927. The Giants finished the tour with a record of 23-0-1.
Only a few examples of this publication are known. The last time a copy was sold occurred more than half a decade ago. The price realized by a major auction house at that time was more than $3,000. That issue had numerous brown pages as well as a missing back cover. The example offered here is complete and intact with some small tears on
the binding. There are roughly 70 pages that contain a missing piece ranging from the size of a dime to a quarter along the bottom edge. None of the photos or pages containing the Negro League tour are affected.
Size: 7 1/4" x 10 1/8". 160 pages.
