Henry Kawaihoa "Prince" Oana was born in Waipahu, Hawaii in 1908. Henry began is professional baseball career in the Pacific Coast League in
1929. He enjoyed considerable success as both an outfielder and pitcher during his 23-year career, becoming one of the first Hawaiians to play in
the U.S. Majors. He spent parts of three seasons in the majors--with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1934, and the Detroit Tigers in 1943 and 1945. Oana
spent most of his career in the minors, batting .304 with 2,292 hits, 261 homers and 1,368 RBI in 2,214 games. As a pitcher he had an 80-54, 3.24
record. This photo was taken and signed during the 1928 Aratani Team tour of Japan. This is possibly the earliest known photograph and signature
of Oana, and was part of the Sotheby's Fujita Collection.
