Bessho (1922-1999) was the premier pitcher in Japan during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He won 30 or more games in a season twice, as well as winning two MVP awards and two Sawamura (Japanese Cy Young) awards. He won 310 games with a lifetime ERA of only 2.18. He also had an amazing 500 career hits and a .254 lifetime batting average. He was inducted into the Japanese Hall of Fame in 1979. Although he has more than 200 lifetime wins he is not a member of the Meikyukai. Membership in the Meikyukai (Golden Players Club) requires a player to be born after 1925.
