In 1968 Tetsuharu Kawakami was ten years into his retirement as an active player. However, during much of the 1960s and 70s, he served as Yomiuri Giants manager. During that time, his team won nine consecutive Japan Series championships! This card dates from this V9 Championship era.

The JGA 137 set has been assigned a scarcity factor of R5 in Japanese Baseball Cards Checklist & Price Guide, Vintage Edition 3.0 by Gary Engel, signifying that five or fewer examples of each card in the set are known. PSA has graded two copies of the Tetsuharu Kawakami card (10 of clubs), and both have received the grade of PSA 7 (Ex/Mt). Neither SGC nor CGC has ever graded a JGA 137 Kawakami, nor has either company ever graded any card from the JGA 137 set. Thus, you have an idea of how scarce this set is.
