Twelve players are depicted in the JCM 135 set, with each player appearing in between five and ten sequentially numbered cards depicting play action. Shigeo Nagashima has ten cards in the set. When placed side by side, Mr. Giants is seen running for a ground ball, fielding it, and then throwing it. These cards are rarely seen, and we know of only one complete set of the ten cards. Japanese Baseball Cards Checklist & Price Guide, Vintage Edition 3.0 has assigned a scarcity factor of R5 to the JCM 135 set, signifying that five or fewer examples of each card are known.
The second year Shigeo Nagashima card offered here is card number eight in the sequence. The manufacturer's overprint on the back indicates that this card could be redeemed for a third prize block of four cards on the prize sheet associated with the JCM 135 set. The vertical black strip on the card front contains the Japanese text (top to bottom) "Giants, Nagashima, infielder, number 8". Nagashima is intensely focused on making the grab. You will notice that compared to the image of the previous lot, the position of the two schoolboys has changed, and the ball is now in Nagashima's glove. This is truly a scarce, early card of the third baseman whose fielding prowess was generally likened to that of Brooks Robinson.
