JCM 142 menko cards are rare. Japanese Baseball Cards Checklist & Price Guide, Vintage Edition 3.0 by Gary Engel has assigned a scarcity factor of R5 to the set, indicating that five or fewer copies of each card are known. This is the first time we have ever offered an example of this card at auction.

Shotaro Ogawa was the greatest pitcher of his generation. After leading his team to eight consecutive appearances in the National High School Baseball Championships at Koshien, he starred at Waseda University from 1929 to 1932, bewildering opponents with his fastball and "drop ball". After college, he continued his association with amateur baseball, shunning the "corrupt" idea of playing professionally.
