The players depicted on this card are the pitchers named to the East Team for the 1948 East-West All Star Series. Most prominent among them is Russian great Victor Starffin. Other Hall of Fame members in the picture are lifetime ERA leader Hideo Fujimoto and Giants lefthander, Hiroshi Nakao. Also pictured are Tokuji Kawasaki, Hideo Shimizu and Shigeaki Kuroo.
This image has been seen in cards of various sizes over the years, leading us to believe that various prize winning premiums were issued. We have speculated that the base card is from the 1948 JBR 168 East-West All Star Set, but we have not yet been able to prove this conjecture. We do feel that the card offered here is most likely a second prize premium attached to a display sheet associated with the JBR 168 set or another similar set. In any case, we have seen only two examples of the card in this size, including this one.
Blank back card.
Size: 7 3/4" x 5 3/4"
Condition: The card would have been graded Good to Vg, but there is a bit of blue ink added to the front.
