1967 Kabaya-Leaf is one of the most prized sets in the world of Japanese baseball card collecting. The first “American style” Japanese baseball card set ever produced, it is also the only major set manufactured during the Yomiuri Giants' V9 period of nine consecutive Japan Series titles. Fewer than 150 copies of each card have survived to the present day.
Isao Shibata was the centerfielder and leadoff hitter for the Yomiuri Giants for most of his 20 seasons in Japan Pro Baseball (1962-1981). He was very speedy, stealing 579 bases during his career. Many feel that he had the potential to succeed in U.S. Major League Baseball. He played against U.S. Major League touring teams in 1966,1968,1971, 1974, and 1978 during which time he accumulated a .398 on base percentage.
