Only a few years ago, we discovered that the card offered here was part of the JBR 31 set. The image was taken during Joe DiMaggio and Lefty O’Doul’s trip to Japan in November 1950.
The card contains the legend “DiMaggio—Outfielder” and O’Doul—Manager” printed on the front in Japanese by the manufacturer. DiMaggio is featured wearing his trademark New York Yankees jersey and O’Doul, who is a member of the Japan Baseball Hall of Fame, is wearing a suit, with baseball bats on his shoulder. The Japanese text stamped on the otherwise blank back by the manufacturer is the word "hit". This means that this example was a prize winner card which entitled the bearer to select a large size card mounted to a display sheet associated with the set. We don't believe that we have ever seen this card in prize winner form before. Obviously, the prize winner cards are much scarcer than the normal cards.
Size: Approximately 1 3/4" x 2 1/4"
Condition: This set was made with small corner protrusions that connected each card to the adjacent cards on the original printed sheet. The cards were then separated from each other along the protrusions before being packed for sale. Such protrusions can be seen in the corners here. There are three small spots of extra printer's ink at the top border and at the left border. Otherwise, the card is Near Mint.
