This is one of only two examples of
this card known to exist, and it is the first that has ever been offered to the
public. The card is undoubtedly a second
or third prize winner card from an unknown bromide card set. Kawakami is depicted in mid swing before a
packed house during a night game.
Tetsuharu Kawakami, a left-handed
first baseman, was the greatest hitter of his generation. As such, he was nicknamed the “God of
Batting”. Kawakami played for the
Yomiuri Giants from 1938 to 1958. During that time, he won three league MVP
awards, and was selected to the Best 9 team in 10 different seasons. He also
played on 13 championship teams. Kawakami's managerial career was equally
impressive, as his Giants won 11 pennants during his 14 years as manager,
including an incredible nine consecutive Japan Series championships.
