1949 was Victor Starffin’s last
great season in Japan Pro Baseball. At
age 33, he pitched 376 innings, won 27 games and threw 35 complete games
including nine shutouts. Subsequently,
arm troubles, depression and alcoholism decreased his effectiveness. He did, however, soldier on, retiring after
the 1955 season, during which he won his 300th game.
This large sized card emanates from
Starffin’s final outstanding year. The
card features a striking headshot portrait of the Russian baseball star.
