We have just uncovered several
cards from a never-before-seen set.
One of these cards, offered here, depicts Victor Starffin.
Starffin is seen wearing a cap worn by the Stars in only in 1947 and
1948. But Starffin was a member of the
Robins in 1947. Since the text at bottom
lists Starffin as a member of the Stars, along with information from other
cards in the set, we can pinpoint the year of issue to 1948.
The back of this card would
normally be blank. However, in this
case, the manufacturer has designated this particular example as a prize winner
card, entitling the bearer to select a card from an associated display sheet. We can only imagine the exquisite items from
which a lucky winner could make his/her choice.
Obviously, this is a super rare
card, since it was completely unknown to the hobby until just a few months
ago. The winner of this lot will own a
special keepsake associated with the immortal Russian pitcher, Victor Starffin,
the 300 game winner and first foreigner elected to the Japan Pro Baseball Hall
of Fame.
