We know that this card is a second prize winner card
associatedwith one of the JBR 52 sets or with JBR 122, but
unfortunately, we don’t know which one.
We are certain that the card is not a prize winner card for JBR 52c,
which was published in 1950. All other
JBR 52 sets and JBR 122 were issued in 1949, making this card a Shigeru
Sugishita rookie card, and a large, colorful one at that!
Shigeru Sugishita was one of the
premier pitchers of the 1950s, racking up 215 wins in just 11 seasons. His
curveball was said to be devastating. He won over 30 games in a season twice
and won three Sawamura (Japan Cy Young) Awards. Sugishita, at age 97, is still
alive, making him the current oldest living Hall of Fame member in either the
Japan or U.S. Hall of Fame.
