Previously, only one type of Fujio
Ueda rookie card was catalogued in Japanese Baseball Cards Checklist &
Price Guide, Vintage Edition 3.0 by Gary Engel, that being the JBR 36
bromide card. It turns out that the JBR
111 Oku Large Bromide set also contains a card of Ueda, and we have added it to
the JBR 111 checklist. Interestingly,
the image on the JBR 111 card is identical to the JBR 36 card. However, the JBR 36 card contains a line of
text, where the JBR 111 card does not.
A graduate of Maui High School, Fujio Ueda, a second
baseman/shortstop traveled to Japan to play for the Hankyu team of Japan Pro
Baseball in 1937. He spent 11 years with Hankyu, retiring after the 1948
season. He was named to the league's Best 9 team in 1940, and to the Best 10
team in 1943. Beginning in 1950, he was a Pacific League umpire.
As there were no prewar cards issued of Ueda, this
1947 issue is a rookie card. The winner
of this card will own the only example known of this card.
