By 1935, Babe Ruth, fresh off the
fabled U.S. All Stars Japan Tour of 1934, was in his last season as an active
player. He had moved from the New York
Yankees to the Boston Braves. On the
other hand, Dizzy Dean was in the process of following up a spectacular 30 win
season on the mound, with a nearly as great 28 win year. The two Hall of Famers are pictured together
on the cover of the May 1, 1935 issue of the International News Photo Weekly
Magazine.
This is the first time we have ever
seen this magazine! Most pages contain
only photos and captions. Over 100
photos taken around the world depicting various events are found inside. Among the photos with captions (in Japanese)
is a photo of World Champion wrestler Danno O’Mahoney battling Dick
Shikat. Nine time grand slam tennis tournament
winner Helen Jacobs is also featured.
King George III of England and his wife can be seen. There is also a photo which is described as
the "winners of a tug of war", sponsored by the Police Sports Association in
Berlin. The victors are shown receiving
a very large portrait of Adolf Hitler in celebration of their conquest. There is no mention of Ruth or Dean inside
the magazine.
