Mr. Giants is seen here wearing a yukata (light Japanese robe) seemingly identical to the yukata he donned for the 1964 Miharuya Co. Yukata baseball card, copies of which we sold in our Auctions #36 and #45 a number of years ago. The pose is similar, but the background and cropping of this photo differ from the Miharuya card. Moreover, this photo is slightly shorter. However, both the card and this photo certainly date from the Oh and Nagashima crewcut era.
Shigeo Nagashima has autographed this photo boldly in blue ink. In 1964, Nagashima batted .314 with 31 home runs. Sadaharu Oh, the other half of the O-N Cannon, set the Japan Pro Baseball season season home run record and batted .320. But these performances weren't enough to keep the Yomiuri Giants from losing the Central League pennant to the Hanshin tigers by one game. Things changed in 1965, as the Giants began their march to nine consecutive Japan Series championships.
