We suspect that the JBR 29 card in this lot is a very early 1958 issue, as Shigeo Nagashima, a 1958 rookie, is seen in his Rikkio University uniform. Nagashima had graduated Rikkio U. in 1957 as the greatest player in Big Six University history. At Rikkio, Nagashima won two batting titles and hit the most homers ever recorded in a season. He was selected to the Big Six League's Best Nine team at third base on five occasions.
It's no surprise that Nagashima's debut in Japan Pro Baseball was the most highly anticipated in the history of Japan Pro Baseball. Nagashima did not disappoint the fans, as he was captured the Central League Rookie of the Year award in 1958. He was named to the Central League Best Nine team in all 17 seasons of his pro career. He was Central League MVP in five different seasons.
This is a high grade example of a Nagashima card produced during his rookie year.
