JCM 23 is one of several sets produced to honor Shigeo Nagashima's rookie season. Following his stellar career at Rikkio U., Nagashima's entry into Japan Pro Baseball was possibly the most highly anticipated professional debut of all time. He certainly didn't disappoint the fans, as he batted .305 with 29 homers and 92 RBI in 130 games, leading the Yomiuri Giants to the Central League title. For his efforts, he was named Central League Rookie of the Year. From there, Nagashima went on to become Japan's most revered player ever and a cultural icon.

Interestingly, this card does not appear in PSA's population report. Such omissions occasionally occur with Japanese cards graded by PSA. This is especially true for cards graded many years ago, as the company was unfamiliar with many of the Japanese issues at the time and was unsure where to classify them in the pop report. This card was graded more than 15 years ago. We would assume that it is a 1 of 1, with none graded higher, but we cannot be certain. We are sure that PSA has not received a single JCM 23 submission for many years.
