Uncut sheets of JCM 163 cards are generally eight card, white bordered 2 x 4 panels. Moreover, the regular white bordered set is given the designation of NS (not scarce) in the Japanese Baseball Card Checklist & Price Guide, Vintage
Edition 2.1 by Gary Engel. However, this 10 card gold bordered sheet is a rare variation, which is probably a prize winner sheet. We are not certain as to whether it was trimmed down from a larger uncut sheet. The JCM 163 set consists
of eight baseball player cards and an unknown number of entertainment stars. Therefore, we are speculating that this sheet consists of about half of a gold bordered set, including non-sports cards. The most important card on the sheet
is Sadaharu Oh (second from left, bottom row). Oh is accompanied on the card by an unknown pitcher. Other baseball players on the sheet are: (top row, left to right) Minoru Murayama (HOF), Toru Mori and (bottom row, far left) two
unknown Mainichi Orions players. In the past, other sellers of the JCM 163 white bordered Oh card have postulated that the set dates from 1959, as that would make the Oh card a rookie. However, this is not the case. One of the non-sport cards on this sheet (bottom row center) refers to the Dairake Second Class television show which ran from 1960 to 1961. Also, the T.V. show of Tetsujin 28 (top row center) debuted in 1960. Therefore a 1960 or 1961 issue date for
the set is probable. Despite not including an Oh rookie card, this is an extremely rare sheet which contains an early Sadaharu Oh variation.
Size: Each card is 1 1/2" x 2 1/2". The sheet is 7 1/2" x 5".
Condition: There are a number of surface creases on the sheet, including three on the Sadaharu Oh card. Also, some minor chipping at the upper border. The lower left corner of the "two Mainichi Orions" card is missing.
