These very scarce cards were issued in uncut panels of three within the pages of a boys' magazine over a period of several months during 1959. According to the information on the backs, 100 cards of sports stars (various sports) were
issued, but we believe that the number of different baseball player cards is just over 30. Nearly all cards from this set seen today are singles, cut from the panels after they were removed from the magazine. The cards are quite scarce in
any form. The Japanese Baseball Card Checklist & Price Guide, 2nd Vintage Edition has given the JBR 61 set an R4 designation, indicating that 10 or fewer examples of each card are known. A left hander, Kaneda was Japan's greatest
pitcher ever, logging 400 wins and over 4,400 strikeouts during a career that spanned the 1950s and 1960s. This large, attractive card would play a central role in any Kaneda type collection.
