In 2004, the Japan Mint produced a six coin and one medallion set of coins to commemorate the 70th anniversary of professional baseball in Japan. The six coins surrounding the medallion in the presentation case are legal tender. However, the silver medallion, while not an actual
coin, is the piece de resistance. It features prewar Japan Hall of Famers Eiji Sawamura and Masaru Kageura. In addition to their heroic feats on the diamond, both were killed in action during World War II. 60,000 copies of this set were produced. The sets were originally offered to the public for 13,000 yen, which at the time was equal to about $125.
