Nagashima, "the Mickey Mantle of Japan", made his professional debut on April 5, 1958, striking out in all four of his at-bats against Hall of Famer Masaichi Kaneda. According to the cutline info attached to the back, Nagashima received a salary of 20 million yen or $55,550,
which was the highest amount ever paid. Nagashima went on to become Japan's most popular player. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988.
