Bessho was Japan's premier pitcher during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He twice won 30 or more games in a season. During his career, he won two MVP awards and two Sawamura (Japanese Cy Young) awards. He won 310 games with a lifetime ERA of only 2.18. This
shikishi (traditional signing board) was signed with a calligraphy brush in the early 1950s, while Bessho was a member of the Yomiuri Giants. Bessho's signature is at the far left, with "Giants" and "300 wins" inscribed in the center in kanji. The name of the original recipient of this shikishi is at right.
