During his college days, Hall of Famer Osamu Mihara (1911-1984) participated in Waseda University's Tour of Manchuria to play a series of games. This autographed Tamazawa Official American Ball, dated Showa 4 (1929), includes the inscription, u–kŽx–ž‘N‰“ª‹L”Ov "Manchuria Tour
Commemorative Ball. First game against the Dairen School". Mihara, after playing against Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig during the 1934 US Japan Tour, was the first player to sign with the newly formed Yomiuri Giants. He joined the military in 1938 and returned as Giants
manager in mid-1947. The team was in complete disarray. He turned things around, leading the Giants to the league championship in 1949. In 1951, Mihara became Lions' manager. From 1956 to 1958 his team beat the Giants to win three consecutive Japan Series titles,
earning him the nickname of "The Magic Manager".
