The 1949 San Francisco Seals Tour of Japan was one of the first post World War II peacetime cultural exchanges between the United States and Japan. Lefty O'Doul served as a tour organizer, Seals manager and a player. O'Doul, a member of the Japan Baseball Hall of Fame, is seen here batting during one of the Tour games. O'Doul was 52 years old at the time. However, he actually came to the plate on three occasions, failing to get a hit against Japanese pitching. The catcher seen in the picture is unidentified. O'Doul's name is printed in Japanese katakana at the bottom of the card.
The number "3" was stamped on the back of this card by the manufacturer, indicating that the bearer of the card could redeem it for a third prize premium card attached to an associated display sheet.
