In 1950, Jackie Robinson by Bill Roeder was first published in the United States. Roeder was a sports reporter for the New York World-Telegram at the time. Later, he joined Newsweek. In 1954, a version of the English language book was published in Japan for the first time. The name was changed to Jackie Robinson Story. The text was translated into Japanese by Masahiko Suzuki. This is the first copy of the Japanese version that we have ever offered.
In our Auction #32 (2007) we sold the 1955 Korean language version of the book. That book had a different dust jacket which was similar (except for text) to the original English language dust jacket. The Japanese language version of this lot has a completely different dust jacket design. The inside portion of the dust jacket on one side contains an entry form for a contest drawing. The other portion is an ad for the book, The City Boy by Herman Wouk. There is only one photo in the book.
