Japanese newspaper companies have traditionally advertised their product with large posters containing the day’s headlines and photos. These posters were placed in glass display cases along busy streets and in train stations. Apparently, one such ad for Jiji News featured the movie, The Prizefighter and the Lady. It starred a very young Myrna Loy opposite future heavyweight champion, Max Baer. In the movie, Baer's character fights Primo Carnera for the championship, with Jack Dempsey as referee. The image on this poster is a scene in which Carnera (left) and Baer (right) are obtaining pre-fight instructions from referee Dempsey. The movie ends with Carnera and Baer fighting to a draw. It was released in the U.S. in 1933, but did not play in Japan movie theaters until 1934.

In real life, Heavyweight Champion Carnera put his title on the line against Baer on June 14, 1934 at Madison Square Garden Bowl in Long Island City, New York, with Art Donovan as referee. The fight had a different ending than the movie, as Baer won the championship by TKO in the 11th round.
