Don Newcombe signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949 after playing one season with the Newark Eagles in the Negro Leagues. He earned seventeen victories, led the league in shutouts, pitched 32 consecutive scoreless innings and was named the National League Rookie of the Year. In his ten-year major league career, Newcombe had a record of 149-90 and an E.R.A. of 3.56. On May 28, 1962 he joined the Chunichi Dragons playing a total of 81 games,but as a first baseman rather than as a pitcher.
This card is a must for any Brooklyn Dodger or Negro League collection. According to Japanese Baseball Cards Checklist and Price Guide, Vintage Edition 3.0, it has a scarcity factor of R4, meaning that between six and ten copies of this card are known to exist.
PSA has graded only two copies of this card. Both examples, including the one offered here, received a grade of PSA 2 (Good). No other third party grading company has graded an example of the JCM 57b Newcombe.
