Lot Description  

Starffin and his family fled the Soviet Union in the early 1920s after a harrowing escape, which included traveling in a freight train packed with typhoid patients, and hiding in a truck carrying corpses. By 1939, he was a Japan Pro Baseball MVP, winning 42 games that season. The colorized image on this card depicts Starffin shortly after the end of World War II. During the war, it was questioned whether he was a Russian spy. Blank backed.
