1949 was Victor Starffin’s last great season in Japan Pro Baseball. At age 33, he pitched 376 innings, won 27 games and threw 35 complete games including nine shutouts. Subsequently, arm troubles, depression and alcoholism decreased his effectiveness. He did, however, soldier on, retiring after the 1955 season, during which he won his 300th game.
Starffin is portrayed here wearing his Daiei Stars uniform that the team used during the 1949 and 1950 seasons in this beautiful action portrait. This card is most likely a 3rd or 4th prize winner from a display sheet for an unknown set.
